Getting the best value from Dell
To get the best value, you should shop around the Dell site using the links on this page.
You can often get a better system by purchasing from the middle of the range rather than from, the bottom and upgrading. However, it is worth looking at business machines when looking for a machine from home, and vice versa if looking for a business machine, rather than taking the one with the appropriate name.
Remember that a low-end XP machine will be visually faster than an equivalent Vista PC but will not look as pretty, but that there are compatibility issues with some older software and printers when using Windows Vista.
If you are purchasing a PC for work we recommend you always choose the business operating system (i.e. XP Professional or Vista Business) because inevitably at some point you will want to link it to something.
We recommend that, when purchasing a Dell, you do not take the full enhanced warranties that they offer unless you feel you really need it. The expected lifetime of a PC is 3 - 5 years, and with the good prices that are available these days an extended warranty is not always the bargain it is made out to be.
